Attic Insulation
Inspection Checklist

A quick attic walk can tell you whether you only need more depth or whether the job also includes air sealing, vent corrections, cleanup, or even insulation removal.

Many quote surprises come from conditions the homeowner never noticed before calling a contractor. A simple inspection checklist helps you see the same scope items that usually change price and retrofit difficulty.

What to Check

  • Average insulation depth in several areas
  • Low spots at eaves, hatches, and mechanical paths
  • Signs of blocked soffits or missing baffles
  • Water staining, damp material, or mold concerns
  • Large bypasses around pipes, wiring, chases, and can lights
  • Duct runs, boots, or bath fans that may need separate work

What Usually Changes the Scope

If the attic is dry and relatively even, the project may only be a top-off. If you find contamination, moisture damage, blocked vent paths, or major bypasses, the contractor will usually need to do more prep before blowing new material.

Use the Checklist With Your Climate Zone

A thin attic in Zone 2 and a thin attic in Zone 6 do not have the same urgency or target depth. Measure first, then compare the attic against the right zone target.
